Day 12-21 and the joy of moderation...

I would like to consider my trip a success, and it may not even be why one would think. It wasn’t because I was able to keep to a strict clean eating plan, but because I was able to make good choices and still savour my vacation.

I did however indulge in a particular craving, and that was for barbeque. Besides the fact that grilling food at high heat is not healthy, I live in a condo that does not allow barbeques and so, I only get to indulge about once a year. Let’s just say I made up for lost time. It was however beautiful, fresh, healthy food. We put organic chicken, sausages, and prawns on the grill. We grilled peppers, zucchini, and snap peas and tossed them with olive oil and apple cider vinegar. We made cucumber salads with garlic-yoghurt-dill dressing, and here comes the part I love the most.... we grilled dessert too! We sliced pineapple and sprinkled it with cinnamon and topped it with coconut milk ice cream that is sweetened with agave. For one of the evenings we had our lovely neighbours over and we took halved peaches, stuffed them with organic goat cheese and drizzled with a little bit of honey and put them on the grill as well. I can’t even begin to explain the combination of the sweet, tart, peaches with the warm goat cheese and subtly sweet honey.

It was actually really easy to stick to lean protein, fresh vegetables and fruit. Even when I went out to eat I went to my favourite healthy restaurant, Fresh on Bloor, and when in Port Hope for Canada Day to Zest Bistro.

I could look at this challenge and say I ate too many nightshades, had dairy a couple of times, had high GI fruit, and definitely indulged in corn (which I know bothers my digestion) a few times but to tell you the truth I am in it for the long haul. I have been incorporating positive habits for the last six years, and it’s important to savour vacations and treats too. Otherwise, I don’t think it’s possible to keep up with clean eating without losing your patience, or worse, your mind. So all in all, I declare this endeavour a success!
