Perimenopause

I have been experiencing perimenopausal symptoms for the past couple of years, particularly hot flashes and night sweats, which have lead to insomnia, a general sense of restlessness and what I can best describe as “foggy brain”.

The symptoms were fairly well controlled with diet (low fat, high fiber, whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, lots of water, exercise –circuit training, walking, yoga- and consumption of soy isoflavones). These symptoms grew worse earlier this year despite trying the medication “clonidine” and other health food alternatives (I have chosen not to take HRT therapy due to family medical history).

I had read that there were studies showing acupuncture had been successful in alleviating symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. A colleague recommended Stephanie and I started seeing her weekly for acupuncture as well as the Chinese herbs she prescribed for a four week period.

There was a dramatic improvement after one month of treatment. No more hot flashes, night sweats and I was sleeping through the night! The restlessness was gone and my “foggy brain” syndrome was greatly improved.

I am still symptom free two months later. I plan to continue seeing Stephanie from time to time as necessary for some “fine tuning”. I highly recommend acupuncture.
